What Are Fountains?

A fountain is a thick, cardboard tube that’s filled with a specialised concoction of chemicals, often with an intended effect or colour.

The fountain has a solid clay plug at the base and a nozzle/choke at the end with an exhaust.

At the moment of the explosion, intense pressure is generated inside the tube as the composition within burns.

Once activated, the composition shoots sparks high into the air, flame and gas. Depending on what is in it you can change the level of effect that occurs but without any chokes there will only be weak reactions from this device.

The composition of a fountain is just like the inside part of an end-burning rocket. It needs to be made out perfectly so that there’s little or no dross, otherwise, it will fail and/or burst into flames due to excess waste in its design which causes slag buildup along with other problems.

Some commercial fountains are put to great use by giving off different colours while they’re displayed. These effects can change colour during the show, which is really interesting!
